Support from the Church of England authorities for the maintenance, repair and facilities of churches is limited, and the costs are often more than congregations can raise alone. This is now a pressing concern nationwide. This is where The Friends of St Bartholomew's Church, Orford come in. We support projects to:
We achieve this by raising vital funds for projects that meet these ends and making grants to the Parochial Church Council, which is responsible for the church and its assets.
"Churches remain a vital and much-loved part of the UK’s history and heritage and we can’t let them fall into neglect and disuse." Sir Michael Palin, Vice President, National Churches Trust
In 2022, we made a grant towards the cost of replacing the church's heating. The previous system burnt oil and was expensive to run. It has been replaced by a modern, efficient, sustainable, cost-effective chandelier-style combined heating and lighting system, commissioned by the PCC. Installation was completed in time for the cold snap in December 2022. Welcome warmth for everyone attending events in church, including the winter Bazaars, concerts and school events.
We have also funded new roving and lapel microphones to enhance the church's existing audio equipment, a sum-up machine and replacement of the bell ropes and stays.
We have worked with the PCC on a project to enhance the information available in the church for the many people who visit the church for a variety of reasons, and are in ongoing discussion about future projects and priorities.
